Overview
A demo trading competition is a contest run on a prop firm's simulated platform: every entrant trades identical demo accounts under the firm's published rules, and a leaderboard decides the winners. You deposit nothing, you cannot lose personal money, and the prizes - cash and funded accounts - are real. It is the lowest-risk way to experience a firm's execution, platform and rule enforcement before spending anything on an evaluation.
Two firms currently run standing public demo competitions: The5ers with a weekly contest and FundedNext with a monthly one. Everything below is drawn from their official contest pages as of October 2026; schedules and prize lists move, so confirm the current heat on the firm's page before you register.

FundedNext: the monthly demo competition
FundedNext has run a free monthly competition since March 2024. Entrants register from their dashboard, trade a simulated competition account through the monthly window, and climb a leaderboard that updates within seconds of each trade. The October 2026 edition advertises a $1.22M total prize pool - $8,000 in cash plus $1,213,000 in funded accounts across 760 winners - with first place taking $5,000 cash and a Stellar Instant $20K account.
The rulebook is fully published: 5% daily and 10% total loss caps, a minimum of five separate trading days to qualify for ranking, manual trading only (EAs, automation and the Trade Manager disqualify the entry), news trading and overnight/weekend holding allowed, position caps per instrument class, and a hard cap of 50 opened trades per day. Ranks 101 through 600 receive lottery coupons for fifty additional funded-account prizes, drawn on a published seed. Cash prizes are credited within 24 hours of close, per the firm's own terms.
The5ers: the weekly demo contest
The5ers runs a free weekly demo competition with the top 100 traders paid out every week. New heats open on a rolling schedule (the firm also runs partner-branded editions with smaller fields), entrants sign up through the The5ers Hub, and prizes mix cash with free accounts, exclusive merchandise, certificates and Hub credits. Entry is free and the contest is simulated - the same demo environment the firm's evaluations run on.
The weekly cadence is the practical difference from FundedNext's monthly format: shorter windows mean faster feedback, and a bad week costs you nothing except leaderboard position. Participant caps on each heat are published on the contest page - popular editions fill quickly, so register when a heat opens rather than on the last day.
Why firms run free demo contests
For the firm, a contest is marketing with a measurable hook: every entrant creates an account, experiences the platform, and sees the firm's rules enforced live - the same funnel that sells evaluations, at a known prize cost instead of an ad budget. For the trader, the exchange is genuine value: free practice on professional infrastructure, a public performance benchmark against thousands of peers, and prize upside that costs nothing but time.
Read these rules before your first trade
- Daily and total loss caps - breaching either disables the account for the window, even on a demo balance.
- Minimum separate trading days - five in FundedNext's format; one lucky day never ranks.
- Automation bans - EAs, trade managers and copy tools disqualify entries at both standing programs.
- Position-size and trade-count caps - both firms cap lots per instrument class and trades per day.
- News and overnight rules - currently permissive at both firms, but read the published list for your heat.
- One entry per person - shared IPs or multiple accounts void all linked entries.
What demo results don't tell you
Simulated fills are modeled: spreads, slippage and fill quality on a demo account will not always match what you would get on an evaluation or live account, and both firms publish the standard hypothetical-performance warnings about exactly this. A leaderboard spike also reflects contest sizing incentives, not the drawdown discipline evaluations punish. Treat a strong contest result as proof you can follow rules under observation - not as a forecast of evaluation success.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a demo trading competition?
A contest run on a prop firm's simulated platform: every entrant trades an identical demo account under published rules for a fixed window, and a leaderboard decides the winners. No personal money is deposited or risked.
Is a prop firm demo contest really free?
Yes - both standing programs (The5ers weekly, FundedNext monthly) have zero entry fee and require no evaluation purchase. Register on the firm's official contest page.
Are the prizes real cash?
Yes. FundedNext publishes cash prizes credited within 24 hours of close plus funded-account prizes; The5ers pays a mix of cash, free accounts, merchandise and Hub credits to its weekly top 100. Prize lists are published on each firm's contest page before registration opens.
Can I use an EA or trade copier in the contest?
No. Both standing programs are manual-trading only - automated strategies, trade managers and multi-account setups void the entry. Read the full banned-actions list on the official rules page before your first trade.
